Fishing
Reports - Central Island: Campbell River
14 March, 2001
We are coming up on prime time for winter run steelheading here
on the northern island. With all of the warm, dry weather we
have been having throughout this winter, the rivers have been
very low. However, there are lots of fish in the river system
making for good fishing opportunities. Winter run steelhead
in our area average about 14 pounds and can get up over 20 pounds.
Once you hook one of these terrific fighters you'll be a steelheader
for life! Winter run steelhead peaks in March and April, so
if you are planning a trip for this spring, call to book your
trip today!
For action on the ocean, we have our winter Chinook salmon fishing.
With the mild sunny days we've been having, it's the perfect
time to get out on the water. Winter Chinook average about 8
pounds, and are terrific fighting fish. Expect lots of action
while fishing, with a good mix of undersized and keeper sized
(25+ inches) salmon. In the last week we have seen lots of fish
coming back to the dock, with several fish checking in at over
20 pounds. This time of year is also an excellent time for prawning.
Take home a mix of salmon and prawns for the barbecue!
Our ocean outlook for 2001 is looking good. The Department of
Fisheries and Oceans is predicting a huge year for Sockeye (around
15 million fish) and this being an odd numbered year, the pink
run should also be excellent. Chinook, Coho and Chums should
be great as well.
The unbelievable winter weather we have been experiencing makes
it hard to believe it's still winter. With temperatures reaching
as high as 18 degrees Celsius during the day, it sure feels
like spring is here. So take advantage of the early spring weather
and head out on the water. If you need any additional information
