Reports - Pacific Rim: Tofino/Clayoquot
Sound Area
June
2001
This
month offers some of the most diverse and productive fishing
opportunities of the year in the Tofino/Clayoquot Sound area.
The Tofino area's saltwater fishing opportunities are in the
peak of season right now with Chinook Salmon and Halibut topping
the hit list, with great fishing often lasting through late
October. The offshore waters from Tofino are definitely the
most productive for chrome bright Chinook Salmon up in to the
40lb. Class, as well as powerful Halibut that will leave your
arms burning after lengthy battles.
Numerous Columbia River Chinook, along with many others, have
already fallen for Anchovies trolled behind a Flasher like the
Purple Glow or Red Gold. Try large spoons or 5-6 inch Tomic
plugs trolled near the bottom for a productive, light tackle
approach. Needlefish and Octopus Hoochies are still a must have
for your tackle selection. Remember the mandatory regulations
of barbless hooks for all Salmon fishing.
For those anglers interested in the pursuit and rewards of the
Pacific Halibut, the preparation of your boat and gear should
be your first consideration. Assuming that your vessel is already
equipped with the necessary safety equipment, a Sonar/GPS or
even a Mapping system are valuable additions. A good gaff hook,
some rope and a Harpoon will help you deal with these powerful
flatties once they are on the surface. Sharp hooks and fresh
baits like Herring, Pilchards, Octopus or Squid are vital. Consider
having some ice in your fish box for the best preservation of
your catch, with further processing methods as soon as possible.
The Saltwater fly fishing in the Tofino/Clayoquot Sound area
has already begun, with a fantastic season of opportunity ahead.
Fly patterns for this time of the should lean toward orange,
pink, and red, or combinations of these colors. Clouser Minnows,
Krystal Shrimp and small streamers in the #2 - 1/0 sizes should
be in your saltwater fly box at this time of the year. Watch
for the sizes and numbers of Coho Salmon to increase dramatically
from now through late October. This should be the best year
for Saltwater fly fishing we have experienced in Clayoquot Sound,
so come and see for yourself what the craze is all about.
Local lakes and streams are very productive right now, with
smaller spoons and spinners working well for the gear anglers.
Flies to consider would be the Halfback Nymph, Beadhead Leech
or Damselfly Nymph for lake fishing in the area. Small streamers
like the Fry fly or Gold Muddler are a standby for most streams
and river estuaries.
