Welcome Millennium
Steelhead!
Vancouver
Island's rivers are filling up with chrome bright steelhead.
Grab the keys, a warm rain coat, waders and your fishing gear
and head to a steelhead river nearby. Fresh chrome bright steelies
can warm up the coldest of days.
This time of the year is fun to meet new anglers, check out
new gear and catch your first millennium steelhead.
Most
of our Island rivers are in great shape, running low and clear.
It's a perfect time to explore the river for new holding spots
for fish, as well as checking on old ones. This is a great month
to hook into large steelhead, and if you overpower one to shore,
please be gentle when releasing it. I personally feel that these
legendary giants are worth their weight in gold.
Fly or Spey fishing is a great challenge for these chrome rockets.
Spey fly patterns with marabou or soft hackles will tease Steelhead
into striking, as they pulse when swung in the river. Leeches,
muddlers, skunks and egg patterns will work for the fly fishers.
Bring dark and bright patterns for varying water clarity. Orange,
reds and pinks, separated or mixed, are great colours.
Gear anglers can drift roe and yarn with corkies or spin-glows.
Size will depend on water clarity. Pink rubber worms and gooey
bobs are effective. Casting chrome and brass spoons will pick
up fish too.
Winter Springs are being caught easily in the ocean when weather
permits. With halibut fishing closed right now, the springs
make the effort worthwhile. If you head out, drop a crab trap
and make this a win-win day.
Our lakes are very fishable for trout and bass with some large
fish being caught. Fly fishers fishing chironomids, minnows
and woolly buggers will catch fish. The trollers pull tomic
plugs, rapalas and flat fish to success. If you are shorebound,
fish powerbait or worms on the bottom.
This is the time of the year that reel anglers like because
it's the dedicated angler that reaps the rewards. You can't
catch fish from the couch, so dress warmly and brave the elements.
Bring a camera and have fun. Good Luck!
Each river and lake has it's own techniques and patterns, and
self-discovery is a great joy. If you need more information,
have a question or need a guide service, we're on the Internet
at www.ex-stream.com.
