Fishing Reports - South Island, Victoria and the Gulf Islands

15 August, 2000

Canyon hiking after rain rewards Ex-Stream Guide Scott Blewett with a Summer Steelhead
Summer Steelhead fishing is Ex-Streamly Hot this month! Most rivers have large runs in, and using flies or gear will get great results. This is a fun time to hike our rivers and find our treasured Summer Steelies.

When found in crystal clear water, try and stay low, and blend into the background. Avoid wearing bright clothes, and also try and stay behind where your fish are, or well ahead of where you're going to swing down too.

This will prevent spooking the fish, as they then can get tight lipped. A really good pair of Polaroid sunglasses is needed to help spot fish and read the river bottom. Some other important gear is a hat, sun screen, felt wading boots and bottled water.

This time of the year is one month that you can actually enjoy a refreshing swim. If you do a lot of wading, or want to swim, make sure that the current in that section of water is safe. Be cautious, as clear water and current can be very deceiving. Self discovery is a great joy, so hike one of the hundred or so rivers and you will be rewarded.

Gregg and Robin from Calgary enjoying our abundant Pink Salmon on the Fly
Pink and Sockeye Salmon enter a few key rivers this month. Their massive numbers make for a great outing, as your catches are very high. These scrappy fish are in the 3 to 6 pound range and with current, do give a fun battle on light gear. Please read local regulations and look out for postings for information on retention and closures.

Ocean fishing is Prime for Tyee Chinooks (over 30 lbs) and halibut are still a huge draw on good tides.

One of the best eating halibust are the giants from the bottom. In the last two years, off the southern end of the Island, halibut over 200 lbs have been weighed in!

This is Coho month and they are very numerous. The prized fighters that tastes so good are under the watchful eye of the fisheries this year. Please read local regulations and look out for postings for information on retention and closures.

The Best time to go Fishing...is Anytime you can Go!
