Fishing Reports - South Island, Victoria and the Gulf Islands

November 15 2000

John and Paul with a Chum Salmon
Oooh chilly weather, morning frost, cold hands. It's still sunny, where is the rain? Well, Coho fishing is still fantastic and our mighty Chum Salmon, with their never give up attitude, are really pushing in our rivers.

These salmon are very aggressive and will snap at almost anything you put in their face. When hooked, they will give you a full battle that will test your angling skills. Some Chum Salmon push the 18 pound mark, with lots in the lower teens. These salmon have rust to purple bars on their sides. You can catch these salmon with relative ease and use them as warm-ups for our winter steelhead.

We will get rains soon, which will be a blessing, allowing fresh salmon to power into our rivers. Fishing lower sections of rivers usually produces the freshest fish, as they have just snuck in. In these sections, especially if tidal water is near, sea-run cutthroat abound. Scrappy trout with a hunger for minnow patterns can even reach the 5 pound mark, but most are 2 to 3 pounds. These fish are marked under their gills with red slash marks.

Rick from Michigan with a fresh Chum
Our rainbow and brown river trout are keying on drifting salmon eggs. As salmon spawn, some of their eggs get washed down with the current. These free snacks fatten our trout for the winter months. Over the next month, you can catch some trout as fat as footballs!

With our rains coming, so will our winter steelhead be entering the rivers. This is the ultimate gamefish, and our favourite. If you get hooked by these fish, you will be on the river banks all winter and into spring. Winter steelhead are a challenge, but also very rewarding, especially if you top the 20-pound mark.

So dress warmly, bring rain gear (it's going to happen soon), and don't wade too deep. Good luck and enjoy the weather.
