Fishing Reports - South Island, Victoria and the Gulf Islands

December 2000

Listen to the sound of your line screaming with Rocket-like Winter Steelhead.

Well, our rains have not happened and our Vancouver Island rivers are all running below their average water heights. We have excellent conditions for our Winter Steelhead fishing. This allows great access to large gravel bars and the river banks for fishing. Be careful when drifting in boats as low water can be tricky for sweepers, log jams and narrow chutes. We helped some over anxious fishers last week, as they flipped their driftboat. Scout the corners if you are not sure what is ahead!

Our rivers are filling with fresh Steelhead, that have explosive runs and soaring leaps, they are a great sport fish to match your wits against.

Before fishing always check, read and look out for posted closures or New Regulations changes. The new 2001 - 2002 Freshwater Fishing Regulation Synopsis are out and are free at fishing stores, gas stations, etc...

One secret to Winter Steelhead success is to match your offerings size to the clarity of water. If your water clarity is 1 - 2 feet then go with large spin & glows, 6 - 8 inch pink rubber worms or rabbit fur and marabou leech pattern flies. Bright colours of pink, reds and oranges will attract attention, but also dark black and browns silhouette nicely for flies, spin & glows and corkies.

If 3 - 4 feet water clarity, try orange gooey bobs, 4 - 6 inch pink rubber worms, medium spin & glows and corkies in pink, red, silver, etc... If you are allowed bait, try some roe on an egg loop knot with your offering. For flies, rabbit fur to marabou material in a full range of colours will work.

For 4 feet and on, a smaller presentation is generally used. Flies in hairwing patterns show a great profile and look lively in brisk flows. Jensen eggs, small spin & glows, corkies and 4 inch pink rubber worms will work with longer leaders. Use roe or dew worms if allowed, and be quick on the hook set. Throwing silver spoons, spinners and blades will also entice strikes, as will marabou jigs.

If you hook up with our Steelhead, you will be in for a great battle that will keep you coming back to river banks or floating down through pools and rapids in guided drift boats. It's going to be a mild winter, so take advantage of warm temperatures and low water. Good Luck!
