Fishing Reports - South Island, Victoria and the Gulf Islands

17 December 1999

" Winter Steelhead " - that's about all you have to say (my blood is pumping)!

Scott Blewett releasing a Coho Salmon, Cowichan River

Vancouver Island rivers are pushing out Winter Steelhead along with their hold over Summer Steelhead cousins. These winter "Chromers" are silver missiles that launch into tug-of-war battles, that when won, are worth every penny spent.

There are hundreds of rivers that hold steelhead on Vancouver Island. There is always a river system in shape, and no matter how much rain falls, you can always catch them! Being early in the Steelhead season, the lower half of most rivers will be the best bet for Chromers.

Good rain gear and neoprene waders will make any cold day comfortable. Our drift boats even have propane heaters on them, to keep you fishing and your line in the water. That's a huge part of winter angling, keeping yourself warm and fishing effectively.

Learn to Fly or Gear fish the different conditions you might encounter, and always be prepared to change to current conditions. Don't wade in without fishing first, Steelhead love to hold tight to shore to escape current flows (especially in the morning).

Winter Springs (Chinooks) are very numerous and scrappy for the hardy ocean angler. So, go deep with Hootchies and Spoons to find those perfect dinner table-size fish. Watch for favourable tides and go to the bottom with herring or octopus for " Hali's " Halibut. If you can pick a fair day, it's usually well worth the effort.

Our Vancouver Island lakes also produce year-round for the determined angler . Hungry Trout and Bass are always looking for a free meal. The Bass will drift deeper for the winter - finding the drop-offs and sunken islands are your best bets. Trout will cruise the shallows (shoals) hunting for treats, and can be very active depending on the water temperature.

Each river and lake has it's own techniques and patterns, and self-discovery is a great joy. If you need more info, have a question or need a guide service, we're at www.ex-stream.com.
