Fishing Reports - South Island, Victoria and the Gulf Islands

February 2001

Great conditions, Great weather, Great fishing!

Happy Clients with a Cowichan Hatchery Steelhead
Sunny days are not the norm for our winter months, but we are having fantastic weather. Winter rains are still not appearing, and we're wondering if they are ever going to come. Good water clarity from day to day with Steelhead in upper sections and "fly only" water.

With low water comes easy wading and more fishable water for the wading fisher. In many rivers Steelhead claim the edges, leaving smaller fish to fight the centre current.

Tons of undisturbed Steelhead get spooked by over-anxious waders, so fish the inshore water before going into the river.

Our rivers are producing good numbers of wild and hatchery steelhead. The clear water is causing some anglers frustration, so lengthen leaders, scale down your offerings and lighten up on your leader line test. Everything will work - flies, spoons, blades, terminal gear, plastics, jigs and bait.

Be very alert and strike at any subtle changes in your drift - it could be bottom or a cautious silver rocket.

Ocean anglers are getting their boats ready for the Salmon and Halibut fishery. Some have been plying the waters all winter long catching feeder Chinook Salmon from 6 to 15 pounds. Trolling bait, plugs, spoons and hootchies will work for these delicious tasting Salmon. If the weather is permitting, a day out it is usually well rewarded.

Lake fishing is OK, as many trout are still in deeper depths. They should warm up fast if we don't get our cold weather. Putting power bait, worms or eggs on the bottom should get you into some fish. Fishing with a depth sounder helps immensely - you can set weighted lines at fishing depths and fly fishers use full sinking lines to reach fish.

Spring is around the corner - in fact it feels as if it's already here!
