Fishing
Reports - South Island, Victoria and the Gulf Islands
January
2001 - Happy New Year!!
Some Trophy Steelhead are being caught in our rivers.
With our rivers not getting blown out from winter
storms, and remaining at good water heights, fishing
has been excellent. Many of our rivers have been
giving up good numbers to the knowledgeable anglers.
Our fishing trips have seen many Steelhead in the
high teens. Most of all these are wild Steelhead
and have to be released. A quick picture and a gentle
release goes far for these giant sea-going rainbows.
Get out and explore one of our many river systems.
Many anglers think they are good fishermen and then
wonder why they don't catch fish? Different water
heights, changes from floods, changing water clarity
and other anglers.
A lot of fishers get stuck into a certain train
of thought and do not experiment enough. They will
race around from spot to spot and then wonder why
someone else caught the fish. We even have people
not believe our numbers until we show the day's
digital pictures or the hatchery caught fish. You
learn a lot from the low water and we love to try
new ideas as well as we spend a lot of time on the
rivers.
More time on the river usually results in more fish,
if you are an observant fisher. Steelhead occupy
preferred lies on a consistent basis and each new
season sees some different lies found. Bank them
to memory and you are building a great database.
While it's possible to catch nothing by fishing
where fish are, you never catch fish by fishing
where they aren't.
Big Dreams, Big Fish, Big Smile
