Fishing Reports - South Island, Victoria and the Gulf Islands

March 2001

My favourite month, as fishing is usually good everywhere!

Scott and client with a good hatchery Steelhead while drifting the Cowichan River
Rivers for Steelhead and trout, ocean for feeder chinook Salmon, bottom fish and halibut, and lakes for trout and bass. If you like to fish, then go out and do it. Our dry winter has made for early summer conditions.

Rivers continue to run low but are still very inviting, as lots of anglers have not changed to the low water methods and have moved on. Steelhead are still pushing in, but they are spooky, so stealth is important. We are still catching fresh fish and patience is required.

Good hatches are starting to come off - Mayfly & Caddis. Trout fishing for browns, rainbows and cutthrouts has started for the fly fishers. Throwing fry patterns, muddlers, and leeches as well as caddis and mayflies will get you fish. Nymphing is really easy and popular for getting hungry trout. We do have some large brown trout to steelhead sizes.

Ocean fishing has picked up as feeder Chinook Salmon from 8 - 15 pounds are getting very regular. The odd ones even larger have graced the docks and cause a stir as anglers get ready for our Tyee summer Salmon runs. Halibut fishing is doing OK and is really getting popular. A great eating fish that plays tug-a-war with the angler when hooked. Bottom fish like kelp greenlings, ling cod and a wide variety of rock cod are easy to catch and are good to eat.

Lakes are warming, some are turning over and some are filled with hungry fish. Great weather has again sped up some shallow lakes into thinking it's already summer. Fun fishing for the whole family and such a wide range of offerings from bobbers with worms, to powerbait on bottom, casting lures, flyfishing or trolling gear. Sunny day, no winds and many stocked lakes to yourself.

Well, they say we might be in for April showers, and we do need the rain, so bring a light raincoat.

Wishing Solid Hook Ups
