Fishing Reports - Sunshine Coast

Spring 2001

Red Snapper caught off Secret Cove

This winter has been exceptionally warm on the west coast and Sunshine Coast, which has made more pleasant fishing days for the anglers during the winter months and early spring.

The strong winds have been occasional, and not much rain to speak of. Our charter boats and the local fisherman have had excellent fishing. The weather has been above average - 40's to 50's degrees - much better compared to last year.

Winter Chinook Salmon fishing was good, with Springs averaging 8 to 15 pounds and a few fish being reported in the 20 to 30 pound range. On my charter on Saturday we had a Chinook that weighed in around 27 pounds, caught right out in front of Secret Cove. Hot Spots were Secret Cove, Fraser Rock (Welcome Passage), Bargain Harbour, A Frame and Halfmoon Bay, Bejji shoals and Epson Point.

Most of the anglers are mooching with live herring, which is available at Secret Cove or Pender Harbour. Trollers this time of the year try to fish very close to the bottom for the best results, and were using Army trucks, green hoochies (needle fish) and coyote spoons at a slow troll to medium.

Going into April, the fishing will pick up with bigger fish coming by, and most of the local fish will be chasing the spawning herring into these bays, which brings more salmon in to feed on the herring.

Bottom fish reports for Rock Cod and Red Snapper have been good, with good size rock fish and Red Snapper in local waters. Ling Cod is presently closed until June.

The prawning was excellent over the winter, with great catches. Over the weekend the traps were full with large jumbo prawns - what a feast we had. Days are getting longer, the afternoons are getting warmer and summer is around the corner - more information will be available soon.
