Fraser Valley Outlook for August & September

A look back into June & July

The past month we have been very busy with fishing and kids out of school. We spent most of June struggling with water levels and clarity on the Fraser.

Although water levels were unstable, we still managed to get some great Chinook fishing for the most part. Plunking and bottom bouncing with spin n glo's were the two most productive methods, while some anglers did well trolling and casting spoons at river mouths.

Sturgeon fishing was difficult throughout June even though we had many good days. It was a hit and miss most of the month with our largest fish at 8 ½ feet approx 250 lbs landed by our guide Erik Skaanning. Although we had many good days we still had to work hard on most of our trips to get fish. The average day was 3 to 4 fish, which is a bit below average for June.

July proves to be a better than expected for Chinook salmon. Wow, what a great month! For Chinook angling. Water levels remained moderate with some instability but nothing too drastic. We had to fish hard every day for our fish but like anything in life, if you work hard enough it pays off. Most days our clients managed to take home at least one nice fish but on many days we had multiple fish, with our best day being 8 Chinook. The past week or so, more sockeye have moved in, we have been hooking 2 to 10 sockeye a day but they must all be released until the river is open for retention of sockeye.

STS News: The past few weeks we have had a difficult time keeping our weekly fishing report up to date. Now that our short summer holiday is over we will try to keep you posted and up to date with current river reports and any changes in regulations pertaining to the Fraser River and tributaries.

A look into August/ September

As previously mentioned in past reports, the Fraser River is scheduled to open for retention of sockeye on August 1st. So far the run has been fair in size with more fish pouring in each day.

The past week we have seen a great increase in sockeye encounters with an average catch of 2 to 10 fish per day, depending on the number of anglers fishing.

August should be a great month for sockeye and chinook salmon as well as some pink salmon towards the end of the month. September looks to be very good as well as most of the pink salmon will be in the Fraser and Harrison system with the start of the coho and chum by mid September.

We still have some days available in mid September and again in late October, which are both prime dates for salmon fishing. Please contact us by e-mail or phone to book your day on the water.

Last months winner of a guided fishing charter was Larry Jackson of Bellingham Washington. Larry choose to fish for salmon most of the day then try for his first ever sturgeon. Larry landed a nice 5-foot sturgeon on his first trip. Congratulations Larry!
