Fishing Reports - Sunshine Coast

August 2000

Great Weather and Great Fishing!

Calm seas with light westerly winds have given all anglers some good opportunities to fish all hot spots.

The fishing has been excellent for the anglers with springs/chinook in the high teens to 35-pound range. Dog fish have decreased, allowing the live bait moochers a chance at the big chinooks going by, which are furious fighters. This August run is even better than last year's, and should still be here into September.

Springs have been averaging in the teens, with most spots producing good fishing, namely the mouth of Secret Cove, Buccaneer Bay, and Pirates Rock, with Epson Point being good. The hot spots, with some fish in the 20 to 30 pound class, have been Sangster Island, Young Point on Lasqueti Island, Bejji Shoals, and the Pillons off of Texada Island.

Live bait fishing is the way most anglers fish, but the trollers have had excellent catches with green hoochies, white hoochies, and coyote spoons, especially in the early morning and late evening. The Pender Harbour area, Bargain Harbour, Quarry Bay and the outside Reef, and the A frame are still producing excellent catches. Live bait is available in Secret Cove, at Buccaneer Marina and Secret Cove Marina, and at Pender Harbour.

Ling cod and red snapper fishing has been excellent, with some ling cod coming in the 20 to 25 pound class. With the extreme low tides, all the clam and oyster pickers covered most beaches and have had big lows to get those rarely seen big oysters. Great prawning for all anglers, and the commercial prawning season is closed for the year.

Coming up August 25th and 26th is the"Salmon Quest 2000" Salmon Derby from Secret Cove, hosted by the Jolly Roger Inn and Secret Cove Marina. This two-day salmon derby offers prizes for the Largest Salmon (1st - $500.00, 2nd - $250.00, 3rd - $175.00) and hidden weight ($150.00), and lots of other prizes.
