Fishing
Reports - Sunshine Coast
March 2000
During
the winter months, the strong winds have limited us, even though
we have numerous islands that protect us. These winds have restricted
our charter boats and the local fisherman from getting out.
The weather has been above average compared to last year.
These past two to three weeks the winds have started to ease,
and with the warmth of the sun, fisherman were able to get out
on some charters. Winter Chinook Salmon fishing was good, with
Springs averaging 8 to 15 pounds, and a few fish being reported
in the 15 to 25 pound range.
Hot spots were in front of Secret Cove, Bargain Harbour, A Frame
and Halfmoon Bay. Most of the anglers are mooching with live
herring, which is available at Secret Cove or Pender Harbour.
Trollers were using Army trucks and green hoochies at a slow
troll.
Going into late March and April, the fishing will pick up, as
most of the local fish will be chasing the spawning herring
into these bays, which brings more salmon in to feed on the
herring.
Bottom fish reports for Rock Cod and Red Snapper have been limited,
but I was told that Mike Cook landed a 13-pound Red Snapper
off of Texada Island in mid February. Ling Cod fishing is presently
closed until June.
The prawning was excellent, and over the weekend the traps were
full with large jumbo prawns....what a feast we had!
Days are getting longer, the afternoons are getting warmer,
and spring is around the corner. More information will be available
in the April report. Check out our website and come out fishing......you
could be part of our April Report!
