Fishing Reports - Sunshine Coast

May 2000

Joel with a nice chinook
The weather this past month has cooperated, especially the first two weeks of April, which was great weather for the angler, with light winds and summer-like weather. Sunshine to warm you from the cool breezes and the snow in the mountains has started the spring melt. With a good snow pack level there will be an enormous amount of run off swelling the rivers in late May and June.

May and June are extreme tidal months, which always produces good fishing and the start of the early migrating runs of salmon, which pass by on their way to the rivers. Anglers and the guides have reported excellent chinook fishing, with fish being caught at most spring local hot spots. Pirates Rock and the A Frame have been the hot spots, with fish to 25 pounds reported. Mooching and trolling have both been good, with fish averaging 10 to 15 pounds. Fishing in May, runs will increase at Bejji Shoals, A Frame, Bargain Harbour, Buccaneer Bay, Secret Cove, Halfmoon Bay, Trail Islands and Pirates Rock.

Mooching with live herring will be the treat for these migrating early chinooks with fisherman fishing in 120 to 200 ft of water, and keeping their herring close to the bottom. For the trollers, a green hoochie with a white belly is the one to use. Trolling with a 28 inch leader or a Coyote spoon can be deadly. Bottom fishing for Rock Cod and Red Snappers has been good, with limits on most charters, with average sizes reported.

This past weekend, with the very low tides, we had a chance to get some Manila Clams and a bucket full of fresh oysters at our favourite beach. Prawning has been excellent, big jumbo prawns in our set made a superb seafood snack, and with the delay of the commercial opening to mid May, the prawning should continue to be good.
