The Bulkley
River in Northeast British Columbia is a major tributary of the
Skeena River. Known for the finest steelhead fishing in Canada,
and amongst the best in the world, the 257-km long Bulkley River
flows westwards from Bulkley Lake, located south of Hwy 16 between
Burns Lake and Houston.
The main tributary
of the Bulkley River is the Morice River, which flows into the Bulkley
just west of Houston. The Bulkley flows passed Telkwa, Smithers,
and Moricetown before merging with the Skeena River near Hazelton.
The Yellowhead Highway 16 follows the Bulkley River for more than
97 miles (160 km), from near Topley all the way to Hazelton.
Anglers can
try for rainbow and cutthroat trout, dolly varden, steelhead, chinook,
and coho in many fishing holes easily reached from the highway.
A popular spot is at the confluence of the Bulkley and Morice Rivers,
near Telkwa.
If you want
company and action in July, fish for steelhead at Idiot Rock just
downstream of Moricetown off Highway 16 on the Bulkley River. The
Yellowhead Highway 16 follows the Bulkley River for more than 97
miles (160 km), from Rose Lake to Hazelton.
For more information
on fishing in this region, contact the Visitor Centres in Smithers
or Hazelton, both on Hwy 16.
