The moderately
sized Puntledge River flows northeast from Comox Lake and merges with
the Tsolum River to become the Courtenay River, which winds through
the town of Courtenay and empties into Comox Harbour on the east coast
of central Vancouver Island.
The fishable length of the Puntledge River is 10km, excluding
tributary streams. Access to the lower 4km of the river is from
various roads in and around Courtenay - a two-wheel-drive car is
adequate. However, there is only limited road and trail access to
the upper 6km of the Puntledge River.
In addition to fall salmon runs and both summer and winter run
steelhead, the Puntledge River supports a fishery for resident rainbow
trout. Sea-run cutthroats are also present, and attempts are being
made to increase the stock through hatchery releases.
Fishing pressure is light, but the fish numbers are relatively
low. Anglers have to compete against the seals for a share of the
fish stocks nearer the river mouth.
