Hidden within the surrounding forests are blueberries and other edible berries, as well as Labrador tea, which was used by native people and early settlers to make a soothing drink.

Recreational activities in this park include hiking, fishing, paddling, canoeing and kayaking and winter recreation.  There's wilderness camping on the lake's sandy beaches, campers are expected to practice “no trace” camping.  Boat access to the lake is made available by a rough gravel boat launch at the north end of the dam, although the gravel does not extend to the water’s edge when lake levels are low. The Nickel Plate Nordic Centre in Nickel Plate Provincial Park features 39km of groomed and track-set trails.
