Nimpkish River |
Lower Nimpkish Provincial Park is situated to the north of Nimpkish Lake and southeast of Port McNeill on northern Vancouver Island.
The Nimpkish River meanders through the steep-sided forested Nimpkish River Valley, featuring important salmon and black bear habitat.
Although most of the 265-hectare park was modified by historical logging, some riverside old-growth western hemlock forests remain.
The Nimpkish Lake, 25 kilometres in length, attracts canoeists, kayakers and hikers and is popular for recreational fishing. Whether you travel the network of logging roads or wander along several nature trails, the scenery of the park and surrounding wilderness is spectacular.

There are no facilities available in the park. Wilderness, walk-in or paddle-in camping are allowed but not recommended. The dense underbrush in the forest provides little or no area to set up tents. There is no fee for wilderness camping.
Lower Nimpkish Provincial Park can be reached by road via Island Highway 19 south of Port McNeill. Alternatively, the south end of the park can also be accessed by foot, canoe or kayak from the north end of Nimpkish Lake. Paddlers should be aware that the waters of the Lower Nimpkish River are known to be dangerous and should take proper precautions.
