I respectfully disagree with the big time exaggerations!
Please do your your due diligence which you have started by including lots of research - read online newspapers- visit lots of sites and forums.

Talk to others in person & online - RCMP - local law enforcement - community resource agencies - tourist bureau's - city halls library's even realtors can be a source of information to some degree, although all can be slightly biased, but you can take the info provided from each source for what its worth & discard whatever your gut tells you is unrealistic or obviously biased.

These are just a few things you can easily do to obtain the information you are looking for.
