Before you move to BC you need to understand that we have been hit REALLY hard with the recession. No one is really doing a lot of house reno's anymore as job security is on everyone's mind and people are not spending money on their homes like they used to when you were living in BC.
Before you move anywhere, especially to BC, first try to see if you can get any customers/work. Put an ad on Craigslist for work and see what happens. Spending a ton of money moving and then finding out no one is really wanting that kind of work anymore would be a tragedy.
Remember that we ALL have experienced an economic meltdown in 2008 and it is no where near recovered. People are just not spending money like they use to.
Also please look at the cost of living out here. Check out rent prices and how many places are available. Check out housing costs if you intend to buy. The average cost of a very average house in a less than average neighbourhood in Vancouver for example is now $879,000. You read that right.
Victoria is less expensive to buy, but the rents are the same and food/goods are much more expensive as everything gets shipped there. Plus there are no jobs in Victoria right now except min wage ones because tourism is still going. That will die down and with it, so will those jobs. The market is SATURATED with handyman, carpenters, skilled tradespeople etc. Established, well-known businesses are unable to get enough work and are laying off staff. Small business owners in trades (like carpentry) are folding. How do I know this? I am a professional employment counsellor working under contract for the Provincial government.
BC is not paradise if you are not making it. PLEASE do your research BEFORE moving here! I see too many people move to BC 'because it is just so beautiful' only to have to leave because it is the most expensive place to live in the whole country.
