Rivers Inlet

Rivers Inlet, Coastal British Columbia
Photo: Oak Bay Marine Group
There are some places in the world, fortunately, that are still inaccessible by road, and the rugged and beautiful Central Coast of British Columbia is one of them.

Carved deep into the rugged Coast Mountains of Canada's wild and remote west coast, Rivers Inlet is one of the most famous sport fishing destinations in British Columbia, with an impressive history of producing some of the largest Chinook Salmon in the world.

The inlet is known internationally for the majesty of its scenery, its unspoiled wilderness and for the legendary trophy-sized chinook - the King of Salmon - which draws anglers from around the world.

Fly-in trophy salmon fishing lodges and rustic fishing camps are located in Rivers Inlet, while luxury sport fishing cruising vessels serve as floating hotels, providing wilderness fishing adventures of a lifetime.

The pristine fjord of Rivers Inlet is an endless panorama of ancient mountains, virgin forests and abundant wildlife that is only accessible by boat and floatplane - 80 miles from the nearest road.

Location: Rivers Inlet is located 300 miles northwest of Vancouver, only accessible by boat and floatplane. Scheduled flights from Vancouver (mainland) to Port Hardy (Vancouver Island), connect with float-plane services to Rivers Inlet.

  • Fishing Resorts located on the shoreline of Rivers Inlet provide an oasis of comfort and security in the middle of this unbelievably vast wilderness. The fish are literally at your doorstep at these resorts, which are among the favourites of anglers searching for trophy salmon in a pristine wilderness setting. Their fishmasters will show you all the secrets of Shotbolt Bay, from bait and tackle to those hidden coves where the giant fish lurk. Trophy Salmon, Halibut, and bottom fishing is offered from June to September, and you can even try your hand at fly-fishing.
  • Fish Species: Giant chinook salmon are not the only attraction in Rivers Inlet. Trophy Coho (Silver) salmon are in the 20-pound range, and consistent catches of steelhead, Pink, Chum and Sockeye salmon provide further variety. Giant halibut weighing up to 200 pounds cruise the floor of the inlet, and near the reefs, ling cod weighing up to 60 pounds can be caught.
  • Season: The fishing season in Rivers Inlet is from June to September, with the best fishing during July and August, as the salmon migrate down the coast of BC to their spawning grounds in the streams of their birth.
  • Fly-in Trips: Rivers Inlet is a popular fly-in destination, with most lodges providing three to four-day fishing packages, which include return flights from Vancouver and Port Hardy on Vancouver Island. Experienced guides are available, and many packages include fishing seminars.
  • The salmon record for these waters was set in 1951, when the world's largest Chinook salmon weighing 82.5 pounds was caught in these waters!
  • Up to 1950, the shores of Rivers Inlet were dotted with as many as a dozen salmon canneries, which exploited the availability of both cheap labour and the abundance of salmon. The canneries are gone now, leaving only pilings and decaying wharves and buildings, and the beautifully rugged and silent region has been returned to the bald eagles, whales and seals.
  • Fishing is not the only pursuit in Rivers Inlet - there are plenty of other activities to keep guests busy, including wildlife viewing and photography, whale watching and hiking through the forests or along the beaches. British Columbia is one of the richest wildlife viewing areas in Canada.
  • See the best of BC when you embark upon one of the many circle tours that take in Vancouver Island, the Discovery Coast, the Sunshine Coast, the interior winelands or the remote Northern British Columbia. The coastal tours involve exciting rail, road and ferry trips, which is half the fun of travelling in British Columbia. Scenic highways flank the coast, taking you through charming beachside communities, rolling farmlands and majestic mountain ranges. Start your journey here and now, by selecting from one of the Circle Tours, designed to assist you in planning your journey by road through beautiful British Columbia.
