Gastown's most famous landmark is Gastown Steam Clock, located on the corner of Cambie and Water Streets. The famous Gastown Steam Clock was built in 1977, based on an 1875 design. The world's only steam clock is powered by steam from an underground systems of pipes that supply steam to heat many downtown buildings. Each 1/4 hour the clock sounds the chimes on 5 brass steam whistlers.
