Salmon River

Salmon River, near Sayward
This moderately sized stream flows north from Strathcona Park, and enters Johnstone Strait at Sayward (Kelsey Bay).

Fishing pressure on the Salmon River is light, with the fishable length of the river being 25km - to the confluence of Kay Creek.

Traditionally, the Salmon River was known to produce the largest steelhead on Vancouver Island, and is now recovering after successful fertilizing programs.

Expect rainbow trout, dolly varden and both summer and winter steelhead. The Salmon River also provides a good fly fishery for sea-run cutthroat, particularly in the lower reaches of the river.

Access is good via Highway 19, the Salmon River logging mainline, and various secondary logging roads.
