The biggest
and newest park on the Sunshine Coast, Tetrahedron Recreation Area
near Sechelt offers majestic mountains, old-growth forest, parkland,
lakes, streams and wetlands.
The park maintains an extensive network of hiking trails throughout
an area with abundant wildlife. Hiking cabins are available free,
on a first come first served basis, for people backcountry hiking
from cabin to cabin.
The hike up to Tetrahedron Peak, the highest summit on the Sunshine
Coast, is a difficult hike, about 6 hours up from Rainy River. Well-prepared
hikers with a route map should allow a full day to complete the
trip - elevation gain about 1600 metres (5000 feet). The view from
atop the peak is reward enough for attempting the challenging hike.
The Tetrahedron
wilderness area is accessed from Sechelt,
by driving 5 km north on the Sechelt Inlet Road, and a further 12
km on the Gray Creek Logging Road.
Guide and Map: The local guide Trails of The Lower Sunshine
Coast is produced by the Sunshine Coast Forest District - available
at Visitor Info Centres on the Sunshine Coast.
